This semester I got to attend Cybersmart PD at my placement school, and it was a genuinely interesting and informative presentation. Cybersmart was developed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority and is part of the Australian Government’s cybersafety program, and it provides activities, resources and advice to help children, teenagers and parents safely navigate the online world, as well as resources and training for libraries, schools and teachers.
The presentation focused on how students use technology, such as social networking sites and mobile phones. As adults, we use the same technology, but we use it in very different ways and have different values, beliefs and awareness of its pitfalls. For example, our presenter relayed a story of a Facebook profile called only "Door Knob", and in many schools across one Australian state, Door Knob became quite a popular friend to have, as a joke. What many students did not understand was that by adding an anonymous 'friend' to their network, they were providing someone who they did not know with access to all their personal information stored on Facebook, including photos, mobile phone numbers, and the school they attend.
My group presentation for ICT focused on cybersafety, which arguably becomes increasingly important as ICT becomes increasingly prolific.
